Christkindlmarket. Gingerbread mugs. Sweet Castle. These are just some of the things that Prep’s Theological German students experienced at the Chicago Christkindlmarket this past Saturday, December 6.
A Christkindlmarket (German for “Christ-child market”) is a typical sight in Germany during the Advent season. It is an outdoor shopping market. There are different vendors selling Christmas ornaments, gifts, candies, and various foods. There is usually a band or some other musical performers as well. The Chicago Christkindlmarket brings this typical German experience to the United States. This market is in its 29th year at its Chicago downtown location.
After leaving Prep at 8 am and a stop for a Kwik Trip breakfast, the group made it to downtown Chicago. From the parking location, it was a 20-minute walk to the Christkindlmarket. After waiting in line for about 25 minutes, the students could enjoy this typical German event: the Christkindlmarket! The students then had a few hours to explore other things around the downtown Chicago area. They went to Macy’s for their Christmas window displays, the Bean, the Harry Potter store for some Butterbeer, and even the American Girl Place store to look around. Before heading back to LPS, the group also got to consume Chicago deep-dish pizza. It was also the birthday of one of the students … so a song was rendered for him at the Bean! :)
We thank our Lord for granting the group safe travels and for providing beautiful weather for this trip. It is always a blessing from our Lord to be able to experience all things German: inside and outside of the classroom.

The projected cost of a new Music Center, which will take the place of our 113-year-old auditorium, is estimated to be $16Million. When Prep reaches an $11.2Million total in gifts and commitments, we will seek permission from WELS Synodical Council to put a shovel in the ground, knowing we still will need to receive an additional $4.8Million in gifts to complete the project.
As of today, through the generosity of God’s people in WELS, Prep has received $7.8M in gifts and commitments. We are most grateful.
Much information about the planned project and the need for it can be found on Prep’s website under
Magnify Music Center Campaign.

We invite our readers to contribute to the Music Center and share the information with others as they have the opportunity.
We look forward to seeing what our Lord has in store for the completion of this needed facility.
“Next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise. The gift of language combined with the gift of song was given to man that he should proclaim the Word of God through Music.”
