Fine Arts

The general objective of the music department is to make it possible for our future pastors and teachers to know more about music as it is written, sung, played and heard so that they may be better equipped to work with the music which we have in our church.

The art courses are designed to help students learn how to plan, construct, and analyze artwork that allows them to think and communicate visually.
The students will explore music of our Lutheran Church as it is found in hymns, liturgy, and in choral literature. All students will prepare this literature for two major concerts (Christmas and Spring). All students will also use this literature for our daily chapel services. The students will gain experience in part-singing. The students will become familiar with fundamentals of music.
Freshman, Sophomore, Junior/Senior
  • The students will experience singing God's praises in a balanced group of four or more mixed parts (SATB or various combinations).
  • The students will experience a cappella singing.
  • The students will add their musical gifts to chapel and church services, and to concerts, mostly sacred, with one secular concert held at the end of the school year.
  • Students in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 participate who choose to join such a group.
  • Some choral selections are taught by sight reading and some are taught by using the piano to lead the part-singing or to drill the parts.
Two years of piano instruction is required of all students who do not take six years of a foreign language. Students are encouraged to begin keyboard in the ninth grade to allow them the opportunity to receive a total of three or four years of keyboard instruction. Students are instructed on an individual basis. The student will learn to transfer the written notes, rests, and terms to keyboard technique. The student will become familiar with scales on the keyboard, piano literature, and hymn playing. Through weekly practice the student's facility at the keyboard will increase.
Organ instruction is an elective for students in grades nine through twelve who have fulfilled the prerequisites for the course. Students are instructed on an individual basis. The student will learn the difference between the piano and organ touch and will learn to play the organ pedals. The student's facility at the organ will increase as they learn to play hymns and various liturgies of our church and become acquainted with organ literature which is suitable for preludes, offertories and postludes in a church service.
Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band
Students in grades 9 through 12 may participate. If they have had no experience they will be started by being taught the very basics either in a group situation or on an individual basis. If they have had experience they will be placed in a band made up of students with varying amounts of experience and seated according to ability.
