Junior Classical League

JCL 2018 Review

29 LPS students joined about 500 students at the annual JCL convention in Madison, WI (Jan 25-27).
Have you ever wanted to witness these things all in one weekend?
  • A view of the WI State Capitol from your hotel room
  • Rock Band on the Nintendo Wii in a hotel room
  • Cheers in Latin for no apparent reason
  • Ben Krause jumping
  • People in a zombie-like state of sleep depravity
That all happened at the Junior Classical League (JCL) this past weekend. 29 LPS students joined about 500 students at the annual JCL convention in Madison, WI (Jan 25-27).

In addition to the above, the students took test in all things related to Latin and Greek: e.g. mythology, mottos, vocabulary, grammar. The highlight of the weekend is Certamen. (Certamen is a Jeopardy-style quiz bowl game.) Teams from each school compete against each other, 3 at a time in 3 preliminary rounds. Each preliminary round consists of 15-16 toss-up questions with 2 bonus questions for each toss-up question. Whichever team answers the toss-up correctly gets a chance at the two bonus questions. For each level (1-4), the top 3 teams after the preliminary rounds, compete in the final rounds: 20 toss-up questions, 2 bonus questions per toss-up.

For Certamen, Prep’s Latin 3 students: Peter Arnold, Erin Rardin, and Jacob Schwark finished 3rd. While the Latin 4 students: Ben Krause, Phil Kistler, Seth Koelpin, Mason Prost, and Sam Wilde finished 2nd.

Although it was a lot of work, the students all had a great time! As 1st time attendee, Ethan Cloute said, “It was more fun than I thought it would be.” Fellow 1st time attendee, Dave Rutschow concurred, “Yeah, I had fun. I enjoyed it.” Seth Koelpin was overheard to have said, “I stayed up so late, I think I went to bed at 10 pm on Friday!” Nate Golisch, a late add to the roster, commented, “I loved the dance on Friday night. I hope to be the next Mikhail Baryshnikov. DANCING is my life!” Kyle Lindemann was witnessed, texting his mother these words, “I wished I went to JCL as a Sextaner!” Prep’s self-appointed Mr. JCL, Luke Ruehrdanz summed it up well, “I’m so tired, but I loved every minute of it! Thanks, Pastor Souk!”

We thank our Lord for giving such varied and various talents to his people!
